Finally, after several months of climbing 6000-12000 feet per week on skis, I am finally ready for the big race in Crested Butte this weekend. This has been a bucket list thing for me, and I am so excited and a bit nervous to traverse 40 miles from Crested Butte to Aspen in The Grand Traverse. My partner Zach Mares has been training in Salt Lake City, and we will meet up this Thursday night to prep for the race. Before we start, we will go through all the mandatory gear check ins. In case you care, here is a list of all the extra stuff we are required to carry along with our skis.
Climbing skins, helmet, neck and face protection, goggles, sunscreen, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of socks, backpack, 100 oz of water, headlamp and spare headlamp, sleeping pad, avalanche transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe, emergency two man shelter, course map, compass, altimeter, commercial stove, fuel and pan, spare pole and pole basket, multitool, 3 feet of ducktape, bailing wire, 2mm cord, and spare batteries. 4 large safety pins, 3 feet of coban, bandaids, 4×4 gauze pads, surgical ABD, alcohol swabs, moleskin, athletic tape, spot beacon and food for 24 hours.
As we race, we will be thinking of our kiddos in Theri Kenya, and the Childrens Home that is being built for them. We have used this race as a fundraiser for them. Currently we have raised about $3200 for their home. If you still wish to donate, you still can at www.emmanne.org, on the giving page. Put #teamtheri in the notes.
