Golden Holiday Events

Candlelight walk pictures

Hello all, the holiday season is fast approaching here in Golden, and there are plenty of events coming up.  With its quaint historic charm, Golden is a great place to visit for some holiday fun.  There are activities for the whole familiy, including caroling, running races, shopping, parades and more.

Golden and the Neighborhood Rehab Project will be sponsoring a 5 k race called the Be A Tool 5k Run  on November 29th. The race will start at 8 am and proceeds will go towards the Neighborhood Rehab project, a non profit organization that helps disadvantaged homeowners fix up their homes in and around Golden.  Come out and run for a great cause.  The race begins at 8 am.

On November 29th, the city will sponsor a Christmas parade and Shop Small Holiday Event which will be held right after the race concludes.  All of the shops will be open, offering discounts, prizes and contests in downtown Golden.  This is a great way to get a jump on your holiday shopping and visit with other Golden friends.  At the Buffalo Rose Events Center, enjoy free gift wrapping and a visit with Santa Clause.

The Golden Candlelight walk will be held on December 5th at 6 pm.  This event is fun for the whole family.  Carolers gather at the top of the hill by the art museum, and work their way down Washington Ave with candles in hand singing Christmas carols.  After the walk, everyone gathers in front of the Golden Chamber of Commerce and Parfet Park for the annual Christmas tree lighting.  The city will also light all the trees along clear creek as well, and many people will spend time walking the paths along the creek to enjoy the  lights.  Feel free to grab some free apple cider or hot chocolate along the way, or stop in to one of the many shops to get warm or buy gifts.  This longtime Golden Tradition is one not to miss!

The Golden Christmas parade will be help on December 6th in downtown Golden at 11 am.  This parade will feature holiday music and dancers, along with elves on motorcycles, Santa Clause and much more.

Free Horse Drawn Carriage Rides will be available Dec 7, 14, 21 from noon to 4 pm.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Another one of my favorite places is Golden Gate Canyon State Park.  This state park is approx 15 miles from Golden up Golden Gate Canyon Rd.  This is a favorite spot for hikers, bikers, wildlife lovers, flower watchers, campers and much more.  What is great about this area, is that it is not that well known, so it is rarely crowded, but you can still get the full Colorado Experience.  I have spent a lot of time here, but still have not been on all the trails, because there are so many to choose from.  With over 12,000 acres of open space to explore, there is way too much to see.  There are deep forests of pine an conifer, aspen groves, open meadows, little streams, remote cabins, campsites, picnic sites and much more.  There are two entrances to the park.  The lower entrance gives hikers access to numberous trails, picnic sites, and rental facilities. The upper entrance takes you through beautiful meadows, aspen groves, and has access to many trailheads and the campgrounds.  The camping areas include Aspen Meadows for tents only, and Reverends Ridge for trailers, campers and tents.  Sites start at around $18 per night but have all the facilities you need to be comfortable.  There are also backcountry camping options where you can hike in to your site for the night or longer.  Cabins and Yurts are also available throughout the park for a different outdoor experience.

One of my favorite trails is the horse trail that leads up to Frasier Meadow.  In Frasier Meadow the flowers and aspen groves are incredible, and this area can be reached from several different directions depending on how long you want to hike.  (see map for details)  Another great hike is the Mountain Lion loop through The Forgotten Valley.  This hike takes you through several types of forest, and passes an old historic homestead that is a great spot for a picnic.

I would highly recommend this State Park for anyone needing to get away, but not wanting to drive too far.  There is a daily pass of $7.00 to get into the park, but if you think you will make a habit of going, I would recommend the state parks annual pass for $70.00.

Fall Happenings in Golden Colorado

Fall in Golden Colorado

 2013-09-29 11.33.28
It feels like yesterday when I was finally seeing the green shoots come up from the thawed ground.  Now, leaves are beginning to fall, the Aspens are turning in the mountains, and there is a chill in the air.  Just today weather reports indicate measurable snow falling in the higher mountains.  The real estate market here continues to be strong, with limited inventory as usual.  Sellers are pumped, buyers are frustrated as they wait for homes to hit the market.  Yet, people are finding homes in the midst of tight competition and rising prices.  If you are in Golden or wondering what is happening locally, here is a quick list below of the latest happenings.Trees Changing on Clear Creek–Be sure to get out and walk the paths along clear creek in October as the trees are just beginning to change.  Usually the weather is still great, and the colors along the creek are fantastic.  Take 10th street from Washington Avenue and head West to the parking lot past the ball fields on your left hand side.

On October 11th, the Knock your Boots of Beer and Chili Festival is back.  This is a great time to test out the best Chili and beer that Golden has to offer.  Even is 2-5 pm between 12-13th St on Arapahoe.  For more info check out http://visitgolden.com/

On October 28th, the Golden Cruise makes its final cruise of the season.  Meeting at the Library Parking lot of 10th Street the cruise is great for families and friends alike.  Come cruise Golden on any type of bike and enjoy beer from New Belgium Brewing Company! For more info visit their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/TheGoldenCruise

On October 31st, the Halloween Crazy Days take place.  The Golden Chamber of Commerce and the downtown merchants get together and offer a safe trick or treating opportunity for kids.  Trust me, there is more candy than your kids could ever dream of.  Tons of people come out to this great event.  For more info visit the  www.goldencochamber.org
